Announcement of Learning Support for International Students

SLA support office offers four types of support for international students!

 ◆For students who would like to practice Japanese conversation

 ?Support 1 “Japanese Conversation Workshop”

 ◆For students who would like us to check Japanese sentences and essays individually

 ?Support 2 “Writing Support”

 ◆For students who have trouble with science subjects such as physics and mathematics

 ?Support 3 “Learning Support for Science Subjects”

 ◆For students who would like to learn how to write essays <Mainly for Chinese Students>

 ?Support 4 “A Seminar for Learning How to Write Japanese Essays”

 

Place: “SLA Lounge” in Multimedia Education Complex 1F at Kawauchi North Campus (A05 on campus map)

Fee: All support is Free.

SLA (Student Learning Adviser), student staff ranging from undergraduates in 3rd year to graduate students, will help you.

Support 1 “Japanese Conversation Workshop”

・Workshop style event with the aim of enjoying Japanese conversation with other students.
・We prepare for chat topics and enjoyable games in each session. Through the activities, you can
 learn practical Japanese phrases for everyday life and Japanese customs and cultures.
・Recommended for students who would like to practice daily Japanese conversation intensively rather
 than to learn Japanese vocabulary and grammar.
・For international students with intermediate or higher levels of Japanese who are able to have a
 basic conversation in Japanese. 

◇Date and How to Join
 ―Held at Wednesday 5th period (16:30~17:30) and Friday 3rd period (13:00~14:00) during a semester. Each session is about an hour.
 ―No prior appointment is required, so please come to the place.
 ―For students with beginner levels, we will provide a special event in late October. 
 ―More detailed information can be obtained from our websites and posters later.

 

Support 2 “Writing Support”

・We will help you with your Japanese essays in a one-on-one session.
・We can assist you to check your Japanese, including grammar, essay’s composition and appropriate expressions for academic writing.
・All Japanese documents such as essays, handouts and research proposals are welcome. 

◇Date and How to Join
 ―Our support desk is held three times or so a week during a semester.
 ―For more detailed schedule of our writing desk, please access to
  http://sla.cls.ihe.tohoku.ac.jp/english/ . Our support desk is open at the time slots with
  “Writing(Wr)” icons.
 ―Each session is around 45 to 50 minutes at most.
 ―No prior appointment is required, so please come to the place. When the support desk is busy, you may need to wait.
 ―Please bring hardcopies of your writing which you would like us to check.
 ―User registration for SLA is required.

 

Support 3 “Learning Support for Science Subjects”

・We will help you with science subjects broadly such as “physics”, “mathematics”, “chemistry”,
 “statistics”, “mathematical economics”, etc.
・Feel free to come to our support desk if you have questions or trouble with your class assignments,
 reports, and self-study.
・We will NOT teach you an answer to a question, but think about the problem together.
・Please note that not all SLA is fluent in English, but we will offer as much support as possible.

◇Date and How to Join
 ―A support desk for each science subject is open during a semester.
 ―For more detailed schedule of our learning support desk, please access to
  http://sla.cls.ihe.tohoku.ac.jp/english/. Our desk is open at the time slots with “Physics(Ph)”,
  “Math(Ma)” and “Chemistry(Ch)” icons.
 ―Each session is around 45 to 50 minutes at most.
 ―No prior appointment is required, so please come to the place. When the supporting desk is busy,
  you may need to wait.
 ―Please bring your assignments that you would like to consult about or your textbooks and
  notebooks so that we can understand your question and problem.
 ―User registration for SLA is required.

 

Support 4 “A Seminar for Learning How to Write Academic Japanese Essays”
 <Mainly for Chinese Students (the seminar will be held in Chinese)>

・A seminar held in Chinese to instruct how to write academic Japanese writing and frequent errors by
 Chinese students.
・The instruction is based on a “Handbook for Essays of Tohoku University (written in Japanese:
 http://sla.cls.ihe.tohoku.ac.jp/handbook/)”, which is provided for freshman of Tohoku University.
・The instructor is an assistant professor from Taiwan.

 ―Two seminars in total will be held in November.
 ―More detailed information can be obtained from our website and posters later .
